Claude's book, GROWING UP ON A CHERRY COUNTY NEBRASKA CATTLE
RANCH, is a remarkably accurate description of life on a
Nebraska Sandhills ranch for the two decades between the mid
1930's to the mid 1950's. It is the unpolished truth about
those times.
For anyone who lived on a ranch during those years, it is a walk
down memory lane. It is a marvelous account that is sprinkled
with photographs from his family's ranch. It honors the men and
women who brought little but their hopes and their hard work to
forge a society that I am proud to be a part of. They were true
heroes, those early ranchers--true cowboys and cowgirls.
Claude's book has great historical value, but it is also a
wonderful read--one you'll want to recommend to your friends and
family once you've enjoyed it. It shatters the myth that
ranching was a romantic life. It recounts the unbelievably hard
work as well as the ways we had fun. For those of us who tended
that land with the help of a good cattle horse, it was a life
we'll ever be nostalgic for.
I treasure it for it is the story of my childhood too. I think
you will treasure it for its honesty and because you'll feel
like you were there and it was a life second to none!
